What a Core Course is at DIS Scandinavia

By: Allison Burton

When you sign up to study with DIS in either Denmark or Sweden you have to sign up for a core course. My core course was called Cognitive Neuroscience of Consciousness. With your core course you get to go on two trips. One is somewhere within Denmark and one is going to another country!

For the first trip my class went to a city called Aalborg in northern Denmark. We did a bunch of activities to understand more what we were learning about in class. One of these activities was walking around the city(with a guide) with a blindfold on. We learned what it was like to not have one of our senses and how that related to consciousness. We also met a speaker who had schizophrenia. It was really cool to learn about his experience and how this disorder can alter your state of consciousness.

For our second trip we went to Florence Italy! Some of my favorite activities on this trip was wine tasting, a food tour, and exploring the Giardino Di Boboli. We left for Florence on a Saturday and on Thursday our class headed back to Copenhagen.

A few other girls and I decided to head to Athens Greece that Thursday to extend our trip some more!

Another part of my core course was the lab course. Not every core course has a lab that is required with it. This was considered a separate class but it was required to take this core course. In this lab we studied unconsciousness. We were separated into groups and got assigned different types of unconsciousness. My group got assigned unconscious bias and we decided to study political bias. You can see our study below. It did take up the most amount of time out of all my classes but it was a really cool experience. Not everyone gets to say they got to design their own study and carry it out in a different country. I was also really cool to work with students from other schools and with different backgrounds than me.
